FOLK ART REVERSE-PAINTED AMERICAN HISTORICAL PORTRAITS, LOT OF TWO, oil on glass, one depicting William Henry Harrison in military attire against a stylized flag background, the other, larger example, a bust-length depiction of Edmund P. Gaines in military attire. Each housed in an old frame. First half 19th century. 11 5/8" x 9 5/8" OA. Harrison in excellent condition, Gaines with some discoloration and small touchups. Catalogue Note: Born in Culpeper, Virginia, Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849) was an important United States military officer during the first half of the 19th century. Over his 50-year career, Gaines was involved in the trial of Aaron Burr, served with distinction in the War of 1812, participated in numerous engagements in the West during the Jackson Administration, and led recruitment efforts at the start of the Mexican War.
