LYMAN, NEW HAMPSHIRE NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, five and one-third alphabet and numeral rows, signed in the sixth row "Nancy C Stanley Lyman NH" above "When my name shall be forgot / The fingers cold which now have wrought / May I in heaven be receiv,d / This canvass show once Nancy liv,d", below featuring a pictorial scene of a flower basket flanked by a house and trees, three sides with floral border. Housed under glass in a black painted and gilt frame. Circa 1835. 16 1/2" x 16 1/8" sight, 19 5/8" x 19 1/8" OA. Excellent overall condition with light fading and fugitive color to some thread, possible loss or unfinished stitching to basket and to grass, frame with some wear, scattered flakes/chips to molding, and surface marks and scratches. Stanley, who was born on April 4, 1823 in Lyman, Grafton Co., NH to parents John Stanley (1775-1853) and Anna Nancy Currier (1784-1858). Nancy married Lester S. Richards (1825-1910), who served in the Civil War, enlisting from St. Johnsbury on August 12, 1862 as a 2nd lieutenant in Co. A, 11th Vermont Heavy Artillery and was eventually promoted to the rank of 1st lieutenant. Nancy and Lester resided in Concord, Essex Co., Vermont and had three sons of whom two did not survive childhood. Nancy died on May 13, 1872 and is buried along with her family in Concord Village Cemetery in Concord, VT.
