BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, top featuring a four-line verse from the poem "Sin's Embrace" written by English poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744), below signed "Eliza Hemming Aged / Twelve Years 1826", flanked by two large trees with birds and a butterfly, bottom featuring a Georgian brick house with luscious green lawn below, surrounded by trees and two large potted flower topiaries, three sides with scrolling flowering-vine border. Housed under UV glass and conservation mounted in the original maple frame with gilt liner. Lot includes a copy of M. Finkel & Daughter, "Samplings: XXIX", 2006. Dated 1826. 12 3/8" x 16 3/4" sight, 16 1/4" x 20 1/2" OA. Very good overall condition with toning to linen, a mended spot along right side under basket with perched bird, a small hole at the "V" in the first word, small holes along edges from stretcher mounting, fugitive color to some thread, frame with wear, chipping to veneer, repairs, and other imperfections.
