Revolutionary War 1776 North Carolina Financial DocumentAutograph Document Signed "Robert Lanier," one page, 7" x 6.25". [North Carolina], September 27, 1776. Related ADS "Wm. Finch" on verso, July 6, 1783. On laid paper. Worn at folds. Nicked at edges. Soiling, ink spots. Very Good condition.In full:"By Mr Finch have sent you Twenty Pounds Virginia Money with an intent to leve it in pledge for the use of Ten Pounds for a few days, the prock or Dollar Bills I want to purchase sundry necessaries which Mr Finch is to try to get for your Hble Servt Robert Lanier." To "Mr. Traugott Bagge" "Bill No 164/16362 of Eight Pounds / Do No. 172/17162 of Twelve Pounds} Virginia Money."On verso, "The contents of the Inclosed was some Money lent Mr I. Hamlin Decd by Robert Lanier which I was to Exchange for Prod. Or Dollar Money with Bagge in order to purchase Salt for the use of the Soldiers when I applyd at Mr. Bagge's he was not at home – neither did I receive any Money of him which I will Testify at any time given under my hand this 6th July 1783. – Wm Finch."Born in Sweden, Traugott Bagge was one of the original shareholders for the purchase of the Wachovia tract. He came to North Carolina with his wife in 1768, and served the community as a merchant, the storekeeper of Bethabara. During the Revolutionary War, he was the business leader of the community, and after the war served as a member of the North Carolina Assembly. Robert Lanier and William Finch were also prominent North Carolinians.Both "pounds" and "dollar bills" are mentioned in Lanier's document. Colonial currency and, after independence, state currency, was issued in pounds, shillings, and pence as well as in dollars. Continental currency was authorized by the Continental Congress and was issued in dollars and fractional dollars.Originally part of the Henry E.
