STAFFORDSHIRE AMERICAN HISTORICAL TRANSFER-PRINTED CERAMIC PLATTER, featuring "THE TEMPLE of FAME / as introduced in A / Print to the memory / of / COMMODORE PERRY", as printed to underside, depicting a woman with pyre inside a temple-like structure with winged-angel blowing horn to top. Marks include printed eagle with pattern name and "By WG Wall. Esqr" below and impressed crown encircled with "A STEVENSON WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE". Andrew Stevenson, Cobridge, England. 1810-1827. 11 1/2" x 9". Undamaged with minor expected usage wear including short scattered scratches. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.Ex-collection of Rex Stark. Catalogue Note: Commodore Oliver H. Perry was born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island in 1785. Perry is most famous for being the "Hero of Lake Erie", leading the American forces in a decisive victory at the Battle of Lake Erie over the British during the War of 1812. For his bravery, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1814. He is most remembered for the words on his battle flag, "Don't Give Up the Ship", which was a tribute to the dying command of his colleague Captain James Lawrence of the USS Chesapeake. Commodore Perry died from yellow fever in 1819, he was only 34 years old.
