LARGE SHAKER PAINTED FOUR-FINGER BENTWOOD BOX, maple and pine, fine covered oval form with copper tack construction. Retaining an outstanding original salmon-/bittersweet-painted surface. Possibly by Daniel Crosman (1810-1885), New Lebanon, NY. Mid 19th century. 5" H, 12" X 8 1/2". Excellent overall condition with very minor areas of wear. Literature: See Sprigg - Shaker Design, pp. 100-103 for similar examples. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.Garth's Auctions. Catalogue Note: The Shaker Museum of Mount Lebanon, New York owns a bentwood spit box and a handled carrier signed and inscribed by Daniel Crosman (1810-1885), both of which employ materials and construction techniques similar to those employed in the making of the present lot. Crosman began overseeing oval bentwood box manufacturing in the New Lebanon community in 1844 and remained in that position for many decades.
