MEXICAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on linen, featuring bands of decorative stitching, center reserve signed "Soledad Ma / teos. lo hizo / a la edad de / 7 anos. Agos / to 19 de 1897", which translates to "Soledad Mateos made this at the age of 7 years, August 19, 1897". Housed under glass and conservation mounted in a modern frame. Dated 1897. 14 5/8" x 21 7/8" sight, 16 7/8" x 24 1/8" OA. Very good visual condition with scattered losses to wool thread, a few minor stains, frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame. Published: M. Finkel & Daughter - Samplings: XVII, p. 27. Provenance: From the collection of Nick Routson, Phoenix, AZ.M. Finkel & Daughter (retains dealer label). Catalogue Note: The Textile Museum in Washington D.C. hosted an exhibition entitled "Mexican Samplers: Patterns of Continuity and Change" in 1993, where a grouping of Mexican samplers shared brightly colored bands of stitching was exhibited. This sampler is an example belonging to that genre of needlework.
