Werner Peiner, 1897 Düsseldorf – 1984 Leichlingen Der Maler studierte ab 1919 an der Düsseldorfer Akademie. 1933 wurde er an die Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie als Professor für Monumentalmalerei berufen.

Mars standing on a chariot between other great warlords like Genghis Khan, Süleyman, Hermann the Etruscan, Charlemagne, Caesar, Alexander the Great, Frederick the Great and Napoleon, one cartouche names Mars. Other characteristics such as quarrel, fame and courage are attributed to Mars, an allegory of life lies dead under the chariot. Closed at the back by a burning classical architecture.
Note:
This is one of eight tapestry designs which Hermann Göring ordered from Peiner for his Carinhall Palace near Berlin. Only one larger box (Mars) was executed by Peiner's students at the Akademie Kronenburg. Peiner produced these designs from May - July 1940.
