Henri Baptiste Lebasque, 1865 – 1937
PORTRAIT OF A LADY IN A RED CLOWN
Oil on canvas, on wood.
49,5 x 33 cm.
Signed "Lebasque" at lower right.
In decorative frame.
Enclosed an expertise by Denise Bazetoux, 2019, in the original, which also dates the painting to the period 1900 - 1910 (the artist's so-called "Fauves" period).
Portrait of a lady with brown updo in a dark red, partly dotted dress with a large collar. She has turned to her right side and looks down thoughtfully with her slightly reddened eyes. The invisible incidence of light illuminates her back and shadows her face and parts of her neck. The background is a bright light green with red and pink accents, reminiscent of a garden in spring with flowers. Painting in the manner of Post-Impressionism, which was common for the French artist.
Note:
The artist moved to Paris in 1886 and there he also met Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir. In 1903 the artist founded the Salon d'Automne together with Matisse and other artists. Artists exhibited there who later became popular as "Les Fauves" because of their artistic style. (1221932) (18)
