BREST BATEAUX DANS LA RADE (BREST'S PORT OF BREST WITH LARGE SAILS AND A STEAMER)
Oil on canvas.
36.8 x 58.4 cm.
Signed "E. Boudin" and inscribed "Brest" at lower right. At the back side several stickers of auction houses and a gallery.
The harbour view is deliberately emphasized in a wide format, also to show a far-reaching horizon, with a headland under a bright cloudy sky, which is reflected in the shimmering light in the calm water of the bay. Numerous ships, predominantly in grey, are shown almost silhouetted against the sun, which is hidden behind the clouds. Between the high three-master and large sailing ships, smaller sailing boats as well as a barge, in between a steamer with a smoking chimney. According to the overall mood, the barren shore is shown in the foreground, rising slightly to the right, occupied by some beach fishermen. The painter has skilfully continued the predominant colour character of the lead-grey clouds and water mood in the predominantly grey bank area. Thus, the present picture also proves in an impressive way that the painter was a forerunner, if not a co-founder, of French Impressionism. It stands out as a typical work of the artist's early phase and is scented with the scent of the years 1870/73. (†) A.R.

BREST BATEAUX DANS LA RADE (HARBOUR BAY OF BREST WITH LARGE SAILING BOATS AND ONE STEAMSHIP)
Oil on canvas.
36.8 x 58.4 cm.
Signed "E. Boudin" lower right with place name "Brest". Various adhesive labels of auction houses and one gallery on the reverse.
The harbour scene with numerous boats is deliberately emphasizing a broad landscape format to show a vast horizon with a headland beneath a vibrant cloudy sky reflected in shimmering light in the calm waters of the harbour. The painting impressively demonstrates the painter as a paragon if not quite co-founder of French Impressionism. This is a painting typical for the early period of the artist and was probably created around 1870/73 (†).
