The Property of a Noble European FamilyVerbeeck Family Group, early 17th centuryActive in MechelenWedding party with a mock joustoil on oak panel110 x 170.3 cm.; 43¼ x 67 in.-歐洲貴族收藏維碧克家族,17世紀初活躍於梅赫倫《上演模擬騎槍比武的婚宴》油彩橡木畫板110 x 170.3 公分;43 ¼ x 67 英寸品相: The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar Conservation who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby`s: Structural Support The artist`s large panel, which has a slightly uneven convex profile, appears reasonably stable. It consists of five horizontal members and wooden buttons are secured along the length of their joins. On the far left and right sides of the panel, there are small historic hairline splits that correspond to the joins. These are not visually distracting and all appear reasonably secure. Paint Surface The paint surface has a relatively even varnish layer. Along the lower horizontal edge there are small passages of uneven gloss in the varnish which is due to previous restoration. The paint surface shows a network of craquelure throughout, which appears stable. In a raking light, some more pronounced areas of craquelure can be seen which relate to historic losses. These are also secure. An area along the lower horizontal edge, to the right of the scroll, shows some rubbing from the framing rebate but will be covered by the framing sight edge. Inspection under ultraviolet light highlights discoloured varnish. Retouchings are also visible throughout the painting under ultraviolet light. These largely relate to historic paint loss along the panel joins and the strengthening of elements within the painting. It is encouraging to note that the many faces and figures in the composition seem to be very well preserved. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in essentially good and stable condition with historic intervention in the past. The extent of retouchings applied in the past, and the structural complexity of the work, should be noted.
