There has been a reduction and minor consolidation visible to all edges. The paint layer is stable and secure and in a very good preserved condition. The remains of an older campaign of restoration is still in situ and can be detected above St.John`s head, to reduce a pentiment, and in the background to reduce areas where the warm ground colour has become over exposed. Original vigorous and energetic brushwork is very well preserved and impasted highlights are retained. Recent insensitive and excessive restoration has been applied to reduce thinness of the paint to the shadows, resulting in over exposure of the ground colour. These areas include the side of the head, the top and underneath of the proper left arm and the torso. Strong chromatic integrity through the red cloak is maintained and subtle tonal variations to the skin tones are preserved.
