A Chinese bronze gui from the Shang dynasty. There are bands of geometric designs around the base and body and a pair of mythical beast handles. Dimensions are: 4 1/2 inches tall X 7 1/2 inches wide, 11.43 cm X 19.05 cm. Weight: 950 grams. All measurements are approximate. Condition: Age appropriate wear. Provenance: This lot comes from the estate of Mr. Tadao Kobayashi, a senior diplomat at in the US Foreign Service during the 1950s and 60s. On his assignments, he visited South Asia, Okinawa, and Japan. This lot was brought to the US by around the 1960s, if not earlier. Similar examples are currently housed in the British Museum under accession number 1955,0519.2 and in the National Palace Museum of Beijing under accession numbers 00087001 (fig. 1) and 00076923 (fig. 2). A similar bronze gui was previously sold at Christie's New York on March 15, 2015, as lot 3181.
