On the frozen water several skaters on the way, in addition a man pushing an ice sledge with brushwood and a small sales stand and at the left margin a man knocking out blocks of ice. On the left side of the picture a small village with old stone houses, a church and a windmill standing at the edge of the river. In the background right two further large windmills are visible. Numerous figures, which the painter has composed tapering to the horizon and which bring the picture to life. The sky predominantly with dense white-grey clouds, which only at the upper right edge let the light blue sky shine through. Picturesque composition, conveying the mood of a winter day in soft sunshine. (1221286) (18)

The painter was a student of Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870), and was active in The Hague and Amsterdam between 1841 and 1883. He travelled to Italy, France and Germany.
