Francesco Beda, 1840 Triest – 1900 ebenda
THE BILLARD
GAME Oil on canvas. Doubled.
60 x 101 cm.
Signed "F. Beda" at lower right.
In decorative frame.
The scenery shifted into the genre of the 18th century: In a large magnificent hall with two Corinthian marble columns, baroque mirrors, golden mural painting and a crystal chandelier hanging centrally from the ceiling, the large cream-coloured billiard table on eight legs, where two men with cue in their hands are playing. They have plenty of spectators; they include two men at the table checking the position of the billiard balls, a seated couple on the left and two standing ladies on the right, one in a long, shiny yellow and gold dress with lace, the other with dark hair in a crimson dress. On a gilded armchair decorated with silk fabric three further figures, of which a lady with a fan probably has the game explained by a man standing behind the piece of furniture. Virtuoso reproduction of materiality in restrained, mostly pastel shades. The painting of high fine painting quality. Minor retouching. (†) (11902014) (18)
