Heinrich Campendonk, 1889 Krefeld – 1957 Amsterdam
THE MUSE
Oil on wood.
37.8 x 29.2 cm.
Reverse estate stamp Heinrich Campendonk "FDR" below handwritten "Herbert Campendonk" (son of Heinrich Campendonck), probably exhibition no. "482" and handwritten signature "Kampendong" on the reverse.
Behind glass in a silver-plated fluted frame.
The strictly stylized conception of the head indicates that Campendonk does not show a concrete portrait here. Contemporary art critics readily described his work of this period as "mystical", "lyrical" and "timeless", which had already become less polychrome, and led into the increasingly monochrome paintings of the years 1919-1922, which were created in Seeshaupt. Campendonk was drawn there when he left Sindelshaupt, overcome by the death of his friend Franz Marc (1880-1916). In Seeshaupt he often received Paul Klee (1879-1940), who lived in Munich, or visited him there or in Possenhofen, where Klee often stayed.
Representation of a breast of a woman with her hand led to her chin, in front of a dark background and a full-figured woman standing to the left, cut at the edge of the picture. On the left two small losses of colour.
