The sitting scholar in front of a dark background, dressed only with a red cloak. In his right hand holding a quill pen with which he is just writing on one side of an opened notebook which he is holding with his left. His head with light white hair, bushy eyebrows, a large full beard and with dark eyes looking down thoughtfully. The light coming from the front left as well as from above emphasizes his fine physiognomy with the wrinkles of his face and the edges of his eyes as well as his bared right shoulder. Excellent quality painting.

In the work of the famous Italian Baroque painter Bernardo Strozzi, comparable depictions of older men or saints can be found. Strozzi is also regarded as one of the most important representatives of 17th century colourism. This is particularly evident in the present painting in the fine coloration of the face, whose hues range from a light beige in the eye and hair area to the reddish forehead and the darker reddish cheeks.
