Albrecht Dürer, 1471 Nürnberg – 1528 EBENDA
THE HOLY EUSTACHIUS (ST. HUBERTUS)
Copperplate engraving.
35.6 x 26 cm.
Monogrammed "AD" in the lower centre on a platelet in the illustration.
Dürer's largest engraving, made about 1501, in which he convinces by the unusual density and delicacy of his engraving and which made a lasting impression on his contemporaries and later art connoisseurs. (†)
Note:
The Legenda Aurea reports on the Roman commander Placidus, who was in the service of Emperor Trajan. While hunting, he was chasing a mighty stag, but when he set him, he was blinded by a bright light: the cross of Christ appeared to him in the stag's antlers, and Christ spoke to him through the mouth of the animal, "Eustachius, why do you hunt me, believe me, I am Christ and have hunted for you for a long time". He then converted to Christianity and took on the Greek name Eustachius. As patron saint of hunting and one of the fourteen helpers in need, he became very popular in the late 15th century.
