Description

Burr Aaron Aaron Burr ADS Dating from his Post-Exile NYC Law Career1p document 2x signed by Aaron Burr (1756-1836), the 3rd U.S. Vice President, the first time as "A. Burr" near the bottom margin recto; and the second time as "A. Burr Atty" in the docket section verso. (In addition, Burr wrote "Aaron", part of the plaintiff's name, twice in the document, once recto and once verso; this could be considered as a partial signature.) Written at the City Hall in New York City on May 15, 1819. On a long strip of partly printed cream paper, with the remaining handwritten words in Burr's hand. Blind embossed with a state seal at upper left. Docketed verso. Expected paper folds and a minor closed tear at right. Minor edge darkening and a few chips. Else very good to near fine. 10.875" x 3.75".The lot comes with a portrait print of Burr after American artist James Van Dyke (active 1825-1844). This portrait of the statesman, with a pair of spectacles perched on the top of his head, was one of Burr's favorite portraits of himself and was widely reproduced in print form. Featuring a facsimile signature at bottom. Expected light wear, else near fine. 7" x 10".The legal summons mandated that an unknown recipient attend the June Term of the New York State Supreme Court to be held at Albany, New York during the trial of John Smith v. Aaron Lyons. The writ was successfully delivered to its recipient, according to the sheriff's notation verso. The trial concerned "trespass on the case", a common-law form of action brought to recover damages from a person whose actions, either through nonfeasance or negligence, have resulted indirectly in injury or loss.Aaron Burr served as Thomas Jefferson's Vice President between 1801-1805. Burr's 20-year-long career as a politician is often overshadowed by two dramatic scandals; the 1804 duel in which he killed former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, and a series of treason charges leveled against him in 1807. In the years immediately following these imbroglios, Burr lived in self-imposed exile in England. He was later expelled and returned to the United States to undertake a low-profile legal career in 1812. In the twenty-odd intervening years before his death, Burr would endure a short-lived marriage and humiliating divorce, financial setbacks, and medical problems. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.WE PROVIDE IN-HOUSE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE!
