大黑天，梵语意译“玛哈噶啦”又译为“救怙主”，是婆罗门教湿婆的变身，而后随着密乘佛教一起传入了西藏，成为藏传佛教体系中重要的出世间护法神，在藏传佛教中发挥着重要的作用。此尊造像一面四臂，头戴五骷髅冠，发中置金刚杵。三目圆睁，卷舌咧口，獠牙外露，威武非凡。袒胸露腹，胸前饰有瓔珞，项挂鲜人头鬘，手、臂及踝处戴有钏环，天衣绕臂飘扬身后。主臂左手托嘎巴拉碗，右手持钺刀。左上臂手持长矛，右上臂手持宝剑。双腿呈游戏坐姿，下承单层覆式莲座。此像造型生动，工艺精湛，装饰华美，持物完整，具有典型16世纪卫藏地区造像的风格特征，堪称代表之作。
