阿嵯耶观音是南诏、大理国时期“滇密”阿咤力教崇拜的主要圣像。其造型非常独特：纤细修长挺直的身躯、高耸精美的头饰、发辫及服饰都与唐宋观音造型、藏传观音造型迥然不同，为鲜明的云南地方观音图像的一大特色，具有重要的艺术价值。阿嵯耶在梵语中的意思是“圣”，意为“圣”观音。《南诏中兴二年画卷》中阿嵯耶观音就作为“圣像”出现，被封为“建国圣源阿嵯耶观音”。南诏王蒙隆舜因崇拜阿嵯耶故而改国号为“嵯耶”，自称摩诃罗嵯耶，钦崇“圣像教”，熔真金铸阿嵯耶观音。此尊阿嵯耶观音菩萨的特点较为突出，造像面相清瘦，束发高耸，全身板直，右手作施无畏印。双腿并拢，下着裙上多阴刻双U形线，整体造像秀美纤长。细蜂腰和纤细的手臂，作工精细，包浆圆润。
