自唐宋以来，燕居焚香，是人们的一种生活方式。香器工艺的发展和创造也渐渐兴盛，以瑞兽或动物为造型及装饰的香器，至少在战国时期就已经出现。唐宋时期，还流行一种香鸭。唐代李商隐诗云：“睡鸭香炉换夕熏。”南宋范成大则曰：“巴童来按鸭炉灰。”这种鸭形香器，到明代时被广泛使用。 此器分为上下两个部分，以子母口衔接而成鸭式香薰造型。整器以上等精铜制成，鸭呈昂首站立鸣啼叫状，羽毛整齐排列。腹部内空，可放置香料。香气通过张开的鸭口飘出，底部置放一方形铜座，鸭单脚立于其上。
