“补子”是明清两代官制服饰——补服上的特殊织绣纹样，它们有的直接织绣于服装之上，称为“胸背”或“背胸”；有的先织绣于单块的面料之上，再缝补于服装表面，称为“补子”，也称“绣补”。根据官位等级的不同，纹样形式也不同。文官所用补子图案用飞禽，武将则用猛兽。在明清两朝官制补子中，除了文武官员常用的方形补子外，还有较多的正圆形、椭圆形补子。这类圆补大体可分为两种，一种是皇帝、王公贵族所使用的团龙、团蟒补子，另一种是清宫后妃、官宦家眷所使用的“花补”。 此龙纹补子，纹样为彩绣五爪金龙，龙身周围有火焰珠及火焰以及彩云、海水江崖图案，每一补子图案中五爪金龙顶部分别为日、月、星辰、山川“四章”纹饰，昭示者英明崇高的无上神威与权力，是帝王服饰上的特定符号。可见此十二龙纹补子等级之高。
