Property from a European Private CollectionPier Francesco di Jacopo FoschiFlorence 1502 - 1567The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist and two angelsoil on poplar panel109 x 85.2 cm.; 42⅞ x 33½ in.-歐洲私人收藏皮耶・弗朗契斯科・迪・雅各布・佛斯基佛羅倫斯,1502 - 1567年《聖母聖嬰、幼年施洗者聖約翰與兩位天使》油彩楊木畫板109 x 85.2 公分;42 ⅞ x 33 ½ 英寸品相: The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby`s:The poplar support has original tapering battens to the reverse and later metal plates reinforcing hairline fractures. Later wooden strips have been added to all edges.Minor historic wood worm damage is visible.A central vertical fracture has been repaired and there is evidence of minor paint loss. The fracture is visible to the paint surface down through the head of the Madonna and into her proper left eye. A further vertical hairline fracture, with minimal paint loss, is visible down through the sleeping Christ. The paint layer is stable and secure but slightly raised through the red of the Madonna’s dress when viewed in raking light. The overall condition is very good and the original textured energetic brushwork through the background and the drapery is evident. The natural sketchy quality through the figures of the putti is maintained.U-V light shows recent mitigation of minor paint loss down the fractures and to pin prick loss to the putti,to a small crescent shaped dent to the proper right arm of the putti upper right, and to the proper left shoulder of Christ.Original tonal modulation across the skin tones is preserved leading to a sustained modelling in these areas.Impasted passages, such as the edges of the veil and the cuffs, are well preserved.Removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality and chromatic values."In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report.
