WELLINGTON INTEREST: A GOLD AND REVERSE PAINTED INTAGLIO COMMEMORATIVE BROOCH CIRCA 1814The silvered white reverse painted intaglio of a roaring lion within a gold laurel leaf surround, with coronet surmount and a banner inscribed Peace 1814, the reverse inscribed Watier's 1st July 1814Size/dimensions: first 4.3cm longGross weight: brooch 8.5 gramsOffered for sale with a receipt from J &J May dated 16/12/89 with a letter of additional information concerning the brooch dated 28.11.89.The brooch commemorates the day that the Duke of Wellington was given thanks from the House of Commons after his victories over Napoleon. The Peace in Paris in 1814 was rather precursory as the objected peace that was finally gained after the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815. On the 1st July 1814 at Burlington House, there was a vast celebration and masquerade ball held by the Watier's Club. The Watier's Club was a short lived gentleman's club, run from 1807 to 1819, led by Jean-Baptiste Watier, who was originally one of the Price Regents personal chefs and encouraged by the Prince Regent to create a new club in response to the monotonous food selections offered at other gentleman's clubs
