oblong, the base and side each engine-turned, the hinged cover engraved with an inscription within engine-turned border 69mm wide, 1oz 19dwt, 61gr The inscription reads `Presented to Mr Jn`o Brogden, by Mr Wm Rose, Superintendant The Police Firemen of Manchester as a Mark of Their Esteem, and grateful remembrance of his uniform kindness towards them June 9th 1835` . John Brogden (1798-1869) was born in Clitheroe but moved to Manchester. He was initially involved in the cleaning business but was to go to be involved in a number of ventures, particularly after founding the business of John Brogden and Sons. Among the projects that the company was to become involved in was the building of the Manchester and Leeds train station that was to become known as Manchester Victoria Station; iron mining in Furness and the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway. He married Sarah, the daughter of Alexander McWilliams and together they had seven children. Part marked inside base and cover. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving. There is a bruise to one corner. The interior is gilt.
