The flattened spherical body is supported by a base rectangular-section base on four small feet and with rounded edges. The base and the body of the vessel are carved from a single piece. The main sides of the body show identical masks of a mysterious beast resembling a taotie with a bird’s beak, enclosed by meander frames. On the narrow sides of the flask there are heads of birds and loose-ring bodies of creatures sculptured in openwork. The vessel has a short waisted neck. On the flat top of the trapezoid-shaped there are two figures of stylized birds and two loose rings. The decorations on the base and the main sides are carved in low relief. This moon flask follows an earlier type of jade vessels made in the 18th and 19th century of the Qing period. There are a few Chinese names for the type, like ‘baoyueping’ (moon-shaped bottle) or ‘bianhu’ (flat vessel), but in the West the name pilgrim flask ismonly used.
