南宋杜绾《云林石谱》：英石，英州含光、真阳县之间，石产溪水中。有数种：一微青色，间有白脉笼络；一微灰黑一浅绿，各有峰峦，嵌空穿眼，宛转相通，其质稍润，扣之微有声。又一种色白，四面峰峦耸拔，多棱角，稍莹澈，面面有光可鉴物，扣之有声。采人就水中度奇巧处錾取之。此山子包浆浑厚，石质坚实细密，姿态秀美，自然而就，沟壑天成，峭壁深峻，亦可以神游其间，别有趣味。加之该英石常摩之处已显栗色，又具“瘦、透、漏、皱”四美，置之几案，亦可掇小景，堪称清代陈设于书房雅室中清供之佳作。
