此件器物以铜为材，取意自然随形树瘤而成。同类造型器物多见紫檀或者黄花梨材质，以精铜为材可谓极其少见，外壁琢出树瘤树皮，仿生效果逼真生动，纹理蜿蜒，浑然天成，展现出传统文人雅士欣赏天然的情怀。崇尚“自然天成”的情怀与巧妙的工艺结合一体，使得此笔筒成为书斋中的案头佳器。明代文人朱彝尊曾作《笔筒铭》云：“笔之在案，或侧或颇，犹人之无仪，筒以束之，如客得家，闲彼放心，归于无邪”。
