A Tibetan silk applique thangka dating from the 18th century. The central figure is a lama or Buddhist teacher who wears a pandita hat and holds a sutra scripture in his left hand while making the gesture of debate with his right hand. He sits on a cushion, and below him are a pair of deer and a bowl of fruit. On either side of the lama's head are buddha surrounded by branches with jewels. The cloth backing of the thangka has a wax Tibetan seal. Dimensions are: 30 1/2 inches tall X 22 1/2 inches wide, 77.5 cm X 57.2 cm. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There are a few pulled threads as well as staining throughout. Provenance: From Mr. and Mrs. Alpine in Northern California. A similar silk applique thangka of the Dalai Lama is housed in the Tibet House Museum in New Delhi. A similar silk applique thangka, but with Maitreya as the central figure, was previously sold at Christie's Hong Kong on May 26, 2008, as lot 1911.
