A Safavid large blue and white fritware bowl, Iran, circa 1700, painted in Wanli style, in tones of blue, the exterior with buffalo, islands and pagodas, the interior rim with a continuous band of sailing ships, pagodas and islands, the centre with pagodas on islands within double-line border, the base with underglaze blue mark, 38.8cm diameter Provenance: Purchased by the late J.B. da Silva (1918-2003) from a carpet shop in Damascus, circa 1964-65. No receipt but mentioned in collection notes. Published: Oriental Art, Spring 1985, Vol. XXXI No. 1, illustrated p. 47, figure 9. Condition Report: Three vertical cracks approximately 15cm, 14cm and 9cm long The base with what is probably a firing crack 8cm long as it does not go through to inside but it may be a glaze crack rim frits Condition Report Disclaimer
