207 AD. Rome mint. Obv: P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES legend with bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: PONTIF COS legend with Minerva standing left, holding spear and resting on shield. RIC 34; RSC 104; Sear 7186.3.09 grams. ("). From the private collection of a retired Suffolk gentleman. In 208 AD, Geta accompanied his parents and elder brother to Britain, where the northern frontier required their urgent attention. The following year he was elevated to the rank of Augustus, and for the first time in Roman history three emperors (Septimius Severus, Caracalla and Geta; father and sons) reigned jointly. Geta gained valuable administrative experience in Eburacum (York) and Londinium (London) whilst in Britain. Ignoring their father's advice, the brothers returned to Rome and converted their palace into two armed camps, where they resided in mutual loathing until Caracalla invited his brother to a 'reconciliatory meeting' in their mother's apartments. Geta was killed, taking his dying breaths in the arms of his mother, Julia Domna. Caracalla later erased Geta's name from stone monuments and from the coinage. Geta's coinage portraiture develops from young boy to mature, bearded adult, demonstrating the striking facial resemblance he bore to his father, commented upon during their lifetimes.
