A patinated bronze group depicting Amphitrite, after the Gods and Goddesses series, French school, mid-18th century, after a model by Michel Anguier (1612-1686)
This representation of "L'Amphitrite" belongs to the series of eight deities illustrating temperaments and passions, made by Michel Anguier in 1652, at the request of Pierre Le Tessier de Montasy. She is depicted naked, standing turned to the left, holding a lobster in her left hand and in her right hand a piece of drapery from which a dolphin emerges at her feet. This emblematic figure of Anguier met with great success and was published throughout the 18th century with variants in different sizes. The artist Pierre Granier (1635-1715) created a Bacchus often paired with our Amphitrite.
