An Indian silver-mounted and ivory marquetry gueridon, Gujarat, 19th century
This elegant pedestal table is entirely ivory-plated and is finely decorated with a very special decoration called sadeli.
This is a micro-mosaic decoration of wood and metal with a geometric pattern, generally associated with the Near and Middle East. It spread to Europe, to Italy (alla certosina decoration), to the Iberian Peninsula conquered by the Arabs, and eastwards to Syria and Persia. It reached western India when the craftsmen of Shiraz imported this technique in the mid-16th century.
The coastal region of Gujarat and Sindh in western India was a renowned centre for the production of ivory veneer for western markets. This pedestal table takes the western form of a tea or playing table, with a sumptuous and delicate decoration typical of the refinement of the works of this region.
A comparable pedestal table was sold in Paris, Hotel Drouot, on 6 June 2018, lot 91.
