A pair of Louis XVI style gilt-bronze and steel two-branch wall-lights, after the model by François-Joseph Bélanger (1744-1818) for the Comte d'Artois' bedroom at Bagatelle castle
This pair of sconces is composed after one of the watercolours made in 1777 by the architect François Joseph Belanger for the bedroom of the Count of Artois at the Bagatelle Castle with its military decor.
The white marble mantel was adorned with two vertical turquoise blue marble couleuvrines surmounted by spear bundles on which were placed on either side of a mirror a pair of sconces with leafy branches that resemble our pair (fig. 1).
A pair of Louis XVI period sconces, close to the original model, the shaft decorated in the lower part with the arms of France, was sold at Sotheby's Paris on March 18-19, 2015, lot 129.
