A Transitional ormolu-mounted, tulipwood and amaranth commode, attributed to Charles Topino
This chest of drawers belongs to a group of chests of drawers characteristic of Charles Topino. The shapes are varied according to the period, either scrolled, quadrangular, or half moon, they are defined by the organization of the decoration of the facade. The drawers without visible crossbars above a girdle drawer adorned with a frieze of ovum opening by means of four drawer rings, are decorated with plain or inlaid decoration in a reserve delimited by a bronze moulding or a strip of veneer as here, but each time trimmed with spandrel pastilles. Transition period, with curved feet, belong to this group:
- A chest of drawers stamped with Topino, very similar in shape, smaller in size, decorated with vases at the bottom of the lower drawer, the same friezes of ovum in the belt, corner scraps and at the edge of the feet, was part of the Champalimaud collection, sold by Christie's in London, July 6, 2005, lot 25.
- A chest of drawers stamped I Leclere and EHB, identical in shape to the one above, sold by Edward Holmes Baldock in the second quarter.
from the 19th century, then Orme Wilson collection, René Fribourg collection, Sotheby's London sale, VII, part 2, 17-18 October 1963, lot 803 and finally Champalimaud collection, sold by Christie's in London, 6 July 2005, lot 26.
- A chest of drawers attributed to Topino, stamped by Nicolas Petit of similar proportions, although with side doors, was sold by Christie's London, 7 December 2006, lot 81. It was decorated with floral marquetry and bronzes typical of Topino.
- A chest of drawers attributed to Charles Topino, this time quadrangular in shape, with floral marquetry decoration, formerly in the collection of Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan, then by descent to Lady Sarah Consuelo Spencer-Churchill, Doyle sale, New York, 15 May 2001, lot 106, then Christie's Paris, the 4-5 but 2011, lot 470.
- A chest of drawers stamped by Charles Topino, this time with four drawers and no apparent crossbeam, belonged to
to the collector Edmond Taigny, Chairman of the commission of the Museum of Decorative Arts between 1882 and 1896, Sotheby's Paris sale, 16 October 2007, lot 130.
