Provenance:
Christie's Paris, 16 December 2002, lot 256 (€ 105,750).
Belgian private collection.
A Louis XV ormolu-mounted, tulipwood and sycamore mechanical writing table, stamped by Roger Vandercruse called Lacroix, circa 1770.
This model derives from the sliding tables that Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763) created in the 1750s, notably for Madame de Pompadour. As a cabinet maker privileged by the Crown, he specialized in the manufacture of mechanical furniture equipped with ingenious systems, combining several functions. As here, their mobile tray conceals a writing desk. As here, the fluidity and purity of lines prevail. Ours is distinguished by its extreme finesse, while Oeben's models are powerfully structured.
