Don White (UK) burr oak bowl 12x30cm. SignedRay's classic form was evident on the Burr-Oak Bowl that I received, and was well on the way to completion. There was very little option other than to turn off the base, blend in the curve, and fill a few of the imperfections. (I am never sure whether to leave or fill).Ray had already filled some of the more obvious defects with brass. I decided to leave these alone and used super glue and dust for the remainder. After sanding the bowl through the various grits, three coats of finishing oil were applied. My Involvement With Ray Key.I could spend a considerable time on this subject, but give me a blank sheet of paper and a pen, the paper is still likely to be blank after several hours. Therefore I will list a few thoughts as they enter my head.I first met Liz Key at their Gallery in Evesham 1979, and Ray at his workshop close by. This visit was suggested to me by Richard Raffan who I had met previously. Our path's crossed many times over the next few years...Parnham House Seminar 1980...and Worshipful Company of Turners meetings etc.Woodworker Show London 1982. I had been invited to judge the woodturning exhibits along-side Ray Key & Cecil Jordan. What an honour.!!Mid 1980's..Invited by Ray, along with other British woodturners, to discuss the formation of the AWGB. This involved meetings at each others houses over many months.Apart from Ray's talent as a woodturner and demonstrator, he was also an enthusiastic communicator. This sometimes meant that meetings went on for much longer than planned.Over the next 10 or 12 years, as committee members of the AWGB, we met many times. How on earth Ray was able to devote so much time to this organization I will never know. This was only possible due to the support, and encouragement of Liz, Ray's wife. I suspect that similar support from our families applies to most of us.I am in no doubt that Woodturning in the UK, and the AWGB, would not be in the strong position as it is now, with-out the input of Ray Key. This is the legacy of the man.Though we didn't meet up much over recent times, we did 'phone each other frequently, especially during the time that you were not well.Ray, my friend and fellow woodturner, it was a privilege to have known you.The Ray Key Collaboration Auction
