Zu Ehren seines Vaters, dem Kurfürsten Friedrich Wilhelm (1620-1688), genannt der Große Kurfürst, beauftragte der spätere erste preußische König Friedrich I. 1696 den Bildhauer und Architekten Andreas Schlüter mit einem Reiterdenkmal. Wie bei so vielen Reiterstandbilder geht der Typus zurück auf das römische Vorbild des Mark Aurel. Ab 1700 begann der Guss der monumentalen Statue, die heute als das Hauptwerk Schlüters gilt. Aufgestellt auf der Langen Brücke in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Berliner Schloss verblieb sie dort, bis sie im Laufe des 2. Weltkrieges zu ihrem Schutz nach Ketzin an der Havel gebracht wurde. Aufgrund der späteren Teilung Berlins fand sie allerdings nicht zu ihrem ursprünglichen Platz zurück, sondern wurde 1951 im Ehrenof des Schlosses Charlottenburg auf einem rekonstruierten Sockel aufgestellt. Im Zuge des aktuellen Wiederaufbaus des Berliner Schlosses wird über eine Rückführung des Reiterdenkmals des Großen Kurfürsten an seinen ursprünglichen Standort diskutiert.

Die verkleinerte, aber dennoch sehr repräsentative und feinteilige Kopie als Zinkguss soll auf einen Entwurf des August Kiss (1802-1865) zurückgehen, eines zeitgenössisch sehr renommierten Ziseleurs und Bildhauers.

In honour of his father, the elector Friedrich Wilhelm (1620-1688), known as the Great Elector, the later first Prussian king Friedrich I., commissioned the sculptor and architect Andreas Schlüter in 1696 with an equestrian monument. As with many other equestrian statues, the type goes back to the Roman model of Marcus Aurelius. The casting of the monumental statue, which nowadays is regarded as Schlüter's main work, began from 1700. Erected on the Lange Brücke in immediate proximity to Berlin Castle it remained there until it was moved for its own protection to Ketzin on the Havel in the course of the Second World War. Due to the later separation of Berlin it did not find its way back to its original position, however, but was placed in the cour d'honneur of Charlottenburg Castle in 1951 on a reconstructed base. In the course of the current reconstruction of Berlin Castle a restoration of the equestrian monument of the Great Elector to its original location is being discussed.

The miniaturised but very representative and delicate copy as zinc cast is supposed to go back to a model by August Kiss (1802-1865), a very renowned chaser and sculptor of his time.
