A VERY LARGE MEISSEN PORCELAIN PLAQUE OF 'LA BOUTIQUE DU MARÉCHAL', late 19th Century, after Philips Wouwerman (Dutch, 1619-1688), finely painted with a rural landscape scene depicting horsemen at a Blacksmith in the mountains, a farrier shoeing a horse in the foreground, a castle in the distance, 33.2 x 43.3cm, crossed swords mark in blue, incised '11 C.G.' above indistinct letters, impressed numeral 33, mounted in a later giltwood frameLiterature: A copy of this painting was once in the famous collection of the Comtesse de Verrue (1670-1736), sold in Paris on 27 March 1737, lot 79, and now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, accession no. 1426. It is illustrated by Birgit Schumacher, 'Philips Wouwerman: The Horse Painter of the Golden Age' (2006), vols. I and II, pp.427-428, cat.C8. The original is lost and remains known only through an engraving made by Jean Moyreau in 1736 and a handful of copies, of which a further five are listed by Schumacher. As the engraving is a mirrored version of their composition, like the plaque in the present lot, it is assumed that they were copied from Wouwerman's original. It is likely that this plaque was copied from one of these copies. A Meissen plate painted with the same scene, made for the court of Elector Augustus II and dating to circa 1720, is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, accession no. C32n38. The size of this plaque is exceptional for Meissen.
