剔花工艺在北宋前期已经出现，利用胎和化妆土之间的反差来表现纹饰。宋代磁州窑的剔花工艺曾经广为流行，定窑学习磁州窑的剔花工艺，也生产了各种剔花瓷器，有白釉剔花、緑釉剔花和白釉褐彩剔花，前两种多为粗胎，胎色发灰，白釉褐彩剔花瓷器则使用细白胎制作，工艺更加规整精细，但传世极少。此器即是细白胎制作。类似参阅：大阪市立东洋陶瓷美术馆藏，住友集团捐赠的安宅旧藏—北宋白釉剔花牡丹卷草纹瓶。注：盒签印“山中商会古艺术品调研社大阪站”标识。“国立历史博物馆第一展览厅 69 2018”。
