相傳旃檀佛是世界上最早製作的佛像，佛成道以後思報母恩，升至忉利天為母說法，數月未還，優填王因佛陀久日未歸，思念佛陀，遂請目犍連主持用旃檀木雕刻了佛像，佛從忉利天複降人間，王率臣民往迎佛，旃檀佛像升空謁佛，佛為之摩頂授記說：我滅度千年後，汝往震旦，廣利人天。旃檀佛於是成為佛陀在世間的代表之一，協助佛陀普渡眾生。
