在佛教藝術中，許多佛像和菩薩像都具有尊貴的儀態，特別是佛像的「三十二好」，將佛的特徵表現的美好而殊勝。但在釋迦牟尼的苦修像中，我們可看到另一種形象的佛像，用以表現釋迦牟尼成佛前經歷的考驗與磨難。釋迦牟尼曾在摩揭陀國的前正覺山西南方的苦行林下苦修6年，日食一麻一麥，身體經受了極大的痛苦，他眼窩深陷、肌骨消瘦如骷髏，卻仍不捨求道的意志，也因為如此，他的苦修像被用來表現他從苦行到得道的過程。
