Label at the back of the painting: "Exhibition of Modern Art in the Republic of China." Zhang Jie was a native of Dinghai in Zhejiang province. After graduating from an art school in Danyang, he left China, studied art in New York and finally settled in Taiwan. There he founded the Taiwan Watercolor Association and in 1981 was founding member of the Taipei Art Club. His watercolors merge traditional Chinese painting style and imagery with the perspective and color of Western art thus creating a new mode of lyrical expression. He participated in many international exhibitions, 2009 he had a solo exhibition at the No. 1 Art Museum in Shanghai. This painting too comes from an exhibition in Taiwan as the label on the back tells us. - Property from a German private collection, acquired in the 1970s - Very minor traces of age
