Zhang Jie (1921-2016), Lotus Leaves in the Autumn, China, dated 1974. Framed under plastic, 101,5 x 68 cm, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: "Zhang Jie '74". Zhang Jie was a painter in watercolors from Dinghai in Zhejiang province. He left China early in his career and studied art in New York. Finally he settled in Taiwan. There he founded the Taiwan Watercolor Association and in 1981 was founding member of the Taipei Art Club. His watercolors merge traditional Chinese painting style and imagery with the perspective and color of Western art thus creating a new mode of lyrical expression. In this painting he used expressive calligraphic brushstrokes to depict the rotten lotus leaves in autumn, a popular theme in traditional Chinese painting - Property from a German private collection, acquired in the 1970s - Very minor traces of age
