此硯取石為料，呈八棱狀，硯堂光滑平整，一側凹進形成墨池。硯背中央鐫御題詩文： “古聖觀象，意在筆前。卦雖畫八，理具先天。伊誰製硯，義闡韋編。四維四隅，匪方匪圓。弗設奇偶，全體備焉。玩辭是資，選石仿旃。滴露研朱，用佐窮年”，並題“仿唐觀象硯”之名。此硯用料考究，色澤黝黑，質地細潤，且形制穩重，又刻有乾隆御題詩文，於樸素中點綴風雅，意境不凡，氣質脫俗。古 圣 观 象意 在 笔 前 挂 虽 画 八理 具 先 天 伊 谁 制 砚义 閘 韦 编 四 维 四 隅匪 方 匪 圆 弗 设 奇 偶全 体 俻 焉 玩 辞 是 资选 石 倣 滴 露 研 朱 用佐 穷 年 。乾 隆 丙 申 新 正御 铭
