LOT 528 LOU SHIBAI (1918-2010), Chrysanthemums and Pair of Doves, China, 20th ct., hanging scroll, 108 x 47 cm, ink and colors on paper. Signature by the artist: "Flowers of Frost at the Eastern Fence in Late Autumn. Citing a quotation of my teacher Baishi, painted by Shibai." Two seals of the artist: "Shibai", "Protect Peace" (baowei heping). Lou Shibai was from Liuyang in Hunan Province. At the age of fourteen he became a student of Qi Baishi (1864-1957) learning calligraphy, painting and seal carving with him and painting in his house for twenty five years until his death. Qi Baishi once called him 'my best student'. In 1942 Lou Shibai graduated at the Art Department of Furen University in Beiping and became teacher at the Capital Art Academy (Jinghua meishu xueyuan). From 1959 on he was a painter and later teacher at the Chinese Painting Academy in Peking. In his paintings he successfully continued the style of his teacher Qi Baishi. Even his calligraphy looks like that of his master, so that it is difficult to tell them apart. In the 1980s there were exhibitions of his art held in China, America, Japan and Europe and even three movies were made to document his work. - Property from a German private collection, acquired before 1987
