余承堯，生於福建，畢業於日本早稻田大學，後任黃埔軍校參謀總長等職，軍旅生活飽覽名川嶽山，對其爾後作品影響至深。余承堯從未接受過正式美術教育，也無特別的師承，創作講究時代感與個人精神，酷愛南管、詩書詞句，書法由古人的碑帖入門，他說：「寫字貴有個人風格，不因襲別人。」顯示出一種率真、質樸卻不落俗套的文人風範，造就了這一位傳奇及異數的創作大家。
