胡念祖是黃君璧的第一大弟子。長年以來立基於傳統繪畫根基，不但不墨守陳規，更能汲古融今，另以潑墨潑彩、灑拓染印風格建立自家風貌，曾於國內外展出百餘次，早負盛名。張大千題贊其畫：「古稱得筆法易，得墨法難；得墨法易，得水法難，今觀念祖道兄大作，筆墨水俱入神化，非近百年來所有也，佩歎無似！」，胡念祖赴美定居受現代繪畫影響，跳脫了傳統水墨的枷鎖，另闢獨特多半的創作風格。
