These three plants are representative of fortitude and uprightness in adverse conditions, as well as symbolic of longevity. The earliest mention of this theme is found in the writings of the Song loyalist Lin Chingxi (1241-1310), although it quickly became a popular decorative motif from the Yuan through the Qing period.See a related double-sided jade screen inscribed with a passage assigned by Emperor Qianlong in the Palace Museum, Beijing, also signed Chen Wangjie Jing Shu ('Respectfully by Official Wang Jie') with two seal of his, illustrated in Noble Virtuosity: Imperial Jades of the Qing Dynasty from the Palace Museum, Macau, 2012, pl.51.
